AIR SCENTING TEST
Air scenting is an area search for one subject in a large area when no known track is available. It is also a test of the handlers ability to use the meteorological condition and the terrain to the dogs advantage when planning strategy for covering the area. Prior to evaluation for air scenting, the handler will have successfully completed the handler standards. Successful completion of the air scenting exercise and the handler exercise will require that all criteria for both be met. If a scent article is used for scent discrimination in an area search test, two people must be used and the dog must identify only the person for which the scent article was supplied.
SUBJECT (VICTIM)
The dog and subject should be unfamiliar to one another when possible. An area of easy to moderate terrain from 1/8 to 1/4 mile square will comprise the search area. The handler may have a navigator of his/her choice, and they will both be given topographical maps of the area, with the search area defined on the map. Handler may conduct the test with the dog off lead. Scent articles may be used at handlers choice.
TIME
The team must find the subject in a reasonable amount of time (30 minutes to 2 hours depending on terrain and meteorological conditions) exhibiting handler and dog endurance, strategy and navigational skills. Dog must have a readable alert when making a find and notify the evaluator when the dog has a find. The dog must do a re-find or have a discernable alert that will allow the handler to find the victim if out of sight of the handler and evaluators.
All tests given the K9 team will be on a pass/fail basis. The Evaluator will determine if the team will be certified upon the completion of the test. The handler and dog will be considered as a team and it is the team who will be certified. If the dog changes handlers, a new team exists and the team will need to be certified.
This certification will be valid for two (2) years from the date of issue.
