WATER SEARCH TEST
Water search is a specialty and requires prior successful evaluation in the discipline of air scenting or trailing (dog and handler operational) to apply for operational status in water search.
SEARCH AREA
The Simulated search will be conducted in an area of at least 150 feet x 150 feet. Article of human origin (blood, hair, etc.) will be put in the water out of sight of the test team, in moderate depth water, approximately 8-12 feet deep. The handler and dog must approach the search area by boat and navigate rapidly and carefully despite radio interruptions and persons on the perimeter. The dog shall give distinct and identifiable alert on the article within 30 minutes. When the dog indicates on the article, or time is called, the article will be retrieved in the dogs presence and the dog may receive his reward.
ALERT BEHAVIOR
The canine must alert within an area, based on environmental conditions, within approximately 30 feet in diameter from the area in which the article is submerged
The team will demonstrate the dogs ability to swim at least 30 feet on command, exhibiting strong, sure strokes and not panicking. Water used for this will be still with no threat of rapids, falls or entrapment.
SAFETY GEAR
The handler will wear a USCG approved Type I, II, III or V floatation device at all times when on the water.
All tests given the K9 team will be on a pass/fail basis. The Evaluator will determine if the team will be certified upon the completion of the test. The handler and dog will be considered as a team and it is the team who will be certified. If the dog changes handlers, a new team exists and the team will need to be certified.
This certification will be valid for two (2) years from the date of issue.
